Detroit Dark Red Beets
v_detroitbeet.jpg
The Detroit dark red beet is a high quality three way variety for canning, market, and home gardens. This variety has a deep red color, globular shape and a dark green top. Growers prefer this strain because of good color and high yields. Light, well-fertilized loam is best for growing beets. Successive plantings at two week intervals are preferable, using an ounce of seed for a 50 ft. row, and 6 to 8 lbs. for an acre. Plant in rows 1 1/2 feet apart and when the plants are about two inches high, thin to 3 inches apart. Beet tops are among the most vitamin rich products of the whole vegetable garden. For winter storage, late beets may be packed in moist soil in a cool cellar.
